Description: Essays on the Places, Seasons, and Peoples of the Four Corners Country

"Ian Thompson is as deft at chronicling the cyclical sweep of time on a particular piece of earth as anyone I know. ... Like the land and people he observes, he sees little use for pretense, for finding deep meanings in things when an evening’s amber light on slickrock or a raven’s flight seem to possess meaning enough in themselves ... You will find the fascination of a scientist herein, the descriptive powers of a poet, the anglings toward truth of a man both inherently alert yet necessarily wary. These meditations on place - the region Ian Thompson knows so intimately yet discovers each week anew - are a pleasure, an artwork, a gift, an almanac of the heart."

- From the Foreword by Russell Martin

6" x 9" 215 pages

The late Ian "Sandy" Thompson was a fifth generation Coloradan who has lived in the Four Corners most of his life. His books and essays describe the natural and cultural diversity of a rugged land that has been inhabited by a relatively few people at a time for thousands of years. Thompson was executive director of the Crow Canyon Archaeological Center near Cortez, Colorado, for five years and continued to work with research archaeologists at the center. He was a consultant to several projects seeking to expand interpretation of archaeological sites in the Four Corners Country to include the perspectives of the American Indians in the region. He served as editor of the Silverton Standard and associate editor of the Durango Herald. Thompson was a city councilman and mayor of Durango and chairman of the city’s Centennial Commission. He made his home in the Cortez area and, for years, wrote a column, “Four Corners Almanac,” for the Sunday Durango Herald, based on his experiences in the wilderness and in the diverse communities of the Four Corners Country.
