Galloping Goose on the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad
Description: Return of Galloping Goose No. 5 on the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic RailroadThe Galloping Goose is a product of the Great Depression of the 1930s. The Geese were introduced by the Rio Grande Southern Narrow Gauge Railroad as a more economical means of transporting freight, mail and passengers along the line from Ridgway, Colorado, to Durango, Colorado, when their regular steam operation went into receivership. The Galloping Geese added an extra twenty years to the life of the railroad, but in 1952, the Rio Grande Southern abandoned its railroad forever. For the next forty-six years, Goose No. 5 stood in Dolores, deteriorating in the harsh Colorado winters. In this video presentation you will learn the history of the Rio Grande Southern and Goose No. 5 and how the Galloping Goose Historical Society saved and fully restored it back to its original condition. In 1998 Goose No. 5 was flying again down the rails of the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad. Today, passengers can experience this piece of history from bygone days of the Rio Grande Southern Narrow Gauge Railroad. 60 minutes VHS
